Top 15 Tight Ends in NFL

Tight Ends are Important

A top TE gives your team a nice edge over the opposition. A quality TE is able to put up WR points. This really helps considering a lot of TEs put of only a handful of points if any at all.

Drew Breezzy's Top 15 TE Rankings

  1. Tony Gonzalez (Falcons) - Gonzalez seems to be more of a wideout than a tight end breaking the 1,000 yard mark last season and finishing with 10 TDs. One of the most productive TEs receiving in the NFL with a sophomore QB equals big numbers. Not to mention the Falcon offense will be playing catch up all season if their Defense performs as poorly as they did in 08.
  2. Dallas Clark (Colts)- Without the presence of Marvin Harrison, Clark should see an increase in production.
  3. Antonio Gates (Chargers) - Gates scored in half of his games last season resulting in 8 TDs.
  4. Jason Witten (Cowboys)-  After having a career best season in 07, his performance in 08 fell short to surpass the 07 statistics. Though he was close to having his second 1,000 yard season. Witten is still a top tier fantasy TE, though sophomore Martellus Bennett's red zone presence is a huge concern regarding Wittens value. Both Dallas TEs finished 08 with 4 TDs. (Given he how high he is drafted on average in leagues I would avoid Witten)
  5. Owen Daniels (Texans) Third in receiving yards for TEs with 862 in 08. Though Daniels only managed 2 TDs. He will be around in the late rounds of your draft and a good pick for a TE without the high price tag. He should be a top 10 of fantasy TE.
  6.  John Carlson (Seattle) - Carlson has huge breakout potential coming off a solid rookie season. The Seattle offense should be more productive this year than last year giving him more redzone opportunities.
  7. Chris Cooley (Redskins)- Second in the NFL receptions for TEs in 08 and Fourth in receiving yards. Though he wasn't too spectacular in 08. He had one mere TD the entire season. Not to mention he was tied for the most fumbles out of TEs with 3.
  8. Greg Olsen (Bears)- Rumored to be a favorite target of Cutler in training camp. With the lack of receiving talent in Chicago, Olsen could emerge as their leading receiver. He finished the 08 season second in receiving  yardson the bears behind Devin Hester and lead the team in receiving TDs with 5.
  9. Zach Miller (Raiders)- Finished 6th overall in receiving last year for TEs. The problem is his lack of scoring which is a result of a poor Raider offense.
  10. Visanthe Shiancoe (Vikings) - Brought in a whopping 7 TDs last season and a few shades under 600 yards. Rumor has it Favre may become a Viking which would aid the passing game of the Vikings.
  11. Anthony Fasano (Dolphins) - 7 TDs and close to 500 yards last season.
  12. Dustin Keller (Jets) Rookie QBs tend to rely on Tight ends so Keller may see an increase in production.
  13. Tony Scheffler (Denver) - Orton relied on Olsen a lot last season in Chicago, so as long as Scheffler stays healthy he could be in for a huge year.
  14. Jeremy Shockey (Saints) - Pass heavy team and high powered offense equals huge opportunity for Shockey. (As long as he stays heathy)
  15. Bo Scaife (Titans)

Do not draft list: Kellen Winslow he is a one man wrecking ball too bad the ball always seems to bounce back on himself. Being injury prone (Knee) and having a team with no solid QB, better off to avoid unless you plan on carrying 2 TEs all season.

Who do you think is the number one fantasy TE for 2009?

  • Tony Gonzalez
  • Antonio Gates
  • Jason Witten

Hated the situation with Shockey leaving the Giants. I really thought he was going to retire as a Giant. I still want to see him succeed however. For now I'll go with Gates, but I believe either Olsen or a newer guy is going to top the list, maybe some rookie, you never know.

Yeah I was also bummed Shockey left. The Giants are my NFC team to follow. Yeah Gates is my favorite for drafting elite tight ends, lower pick than Tony Gonzalez and may prove just as valuable. For other tight ends John Carlson and Dustin Keller are around in the later rounds of the fantasy drafts and hold huge sleeper potential.
